Cats pay close attention to patterns. When you move through the home, you create a trail of interesting sounds, scents, open doors, and opportunities. Following you is often less about neediness and more about participating in the day.

Your presence can also act as a safety signal. A cat who settles nearby with a loose body, half-closed eyes, and relaxed ears is showing comfort. They may not want constant handling; they simply prefer sharing the same space.

Give your cat easy places to join you—a chair by your desk, a mat in the kitchen, or a window perch nearby. Companionship works best when closeness remains their choice.
